Repairing Scratches in Laminate Flooring

When I moved into my home, the floor in the living room had just been refinished with beautiful honey toned laminate flooring. It was beautiful and it fit my decor perfectly. The only problem was the fact that one of my chair had popped a cap, unbeknownst to everyone involved, and it wasn't until a few weeks later, when I went to rearrange a few pieces of furniture, that I noticed it. Much to my horror, the gleaming floor beneath the chair had become a scratched mess and I shuddered at the thought of having to fix them.

Now, I'm sure that I am not the only person who has had to deal with scratched laminate flooring. In fact, I'm almost positive that the problem is universally shared. The simple truth is, if you are going to own laminate flooring, at one time you will own scratched laminate flooring. Most people would simply sigh and shift the furniture around to cover the evidence, something that I actually did for a few months, but laminate flooring can be fixed without having to tear out pieces and replace them.

Ceramic Knife

Most repairs in laminate flooring are pretty minor. A glass may have fallen and gouged a small hole or the kids may have scraped a toy car, minus wheels, across a small section. The scratches and holes are simply surface damage but they definitely detract from the once shiny beauty of your floors.

With minor damage, you will only need to do minor repairs to your laminate. Unfortunately, as with most repairs, there is nothing regularly stocked in your shelves that will fix the floors. You will need to make a run to the local home hardware or flooring store to pick up a repair kit. Some manufacturers will make repair kits for their flooring so the best place to start is the store where you purchased your flooring.

If you aren't sure of the manufacturer or the manufacturer does not have a repair product, simply purchase a generic repair kit. A repair kit usually consists of a tube of putty or wax. This is your actual filler. Some repair kits have colored putty while others have paint that you mix to create the matching floor color; this you mix with the putty before applying. Both are perfectly fine to purchase and you will usually run yourself about ten to twenty dollars.

Some repair kits come with putty knife and everything else you need but if it doesn't simply pick up a putty knife while you are at the store. Popsicle sticks work perfectly for applying the putty to the crack.

Before you start repairing your scratches and dents, make sure the area is clean of any debris and is dry. There is no sense repairing a spot if a patch of dog hair is going to be glued into the floor. Once the area is prepared, it's time to get mixing.

If you went with a colored putty that matches your floor, all you will need to do is spoon in the putty, but if you went with a mix, you will need to match and create the desired color. Once you have that, spoon in the putty and smooth with the putty knife. Remove any of the excess putty so you have a smooth surface. Lastly, wipe the area around the scratch, being careful to not touch the repaired scratch with a clean cloth to wash away any residue.

Once it dries, your laminate flooring should look as good as new.

Sometimes, you will find the occasional scratch that is too shallow for the putty to work properly. If this is the case, the best product on the market is ScratchAway. This is a spray on treatment for any small scratches on laminate and other wood flooring. All you need to do is spray the area and then buff until it is dry.

So with a few little tricks of the trade, there are very few reasons why you can't enjoy scratch free laminate flooring for years to come.

Remove Ceramic Tiles

Removing ceramic tiles can be a hard job, especially if they have been there for a long time. The job is a bit easier if the tiles are adhered to a cement board. Originally, some years back, tiles were set into the cement and when they set the cement and the tile were one unit. Then came this board which is a layer of cement applied to a wood board and the tiles were laid on this.

Ceramic Knife

The tools you will need to remove the ceramic tile are as follows: a 3 inch putty knife with a stiff blade; a small hammer, a flat garden spade and an iron pry bar. For your safety, you should wear wrap around safety glasses to avoid getting flying particles in your eyes; medium to heavy leather gloves to save your hands from scrapes and cuts; and a shirt with long sleeve or a sweatshirt.

Ceramic Knife

We will assume that your tile is adhered to a board attached with cement and proceed from there. Do not try to remove the tiles from the board with the intention of saving it. It would be very hard to do this successfully and cement board is fairly inexpensive so the cement board should be removed with the tile. Do not start the removal from the center of the ceramic tile. Find an area where the tile and a different material meet.

To remove the cement board and the tile together you will first have to remove some of the tile and the board separately. Take edge of the putty knife and set it into the grout surrounding the tile and remove that grout. When the grout is removed try to pop the tile off. You can use the putty knife by placing it under the tile and striking it. The tile will either break or come off. Remove a few more tiles that way. At this point the cement board should be obvious. Strike it with the hammer until it is broken and remove it. Continue this way until all of the tile and cement board has been removed.

Rotovinyl comes in both sheet and tile form. Resistance to wear is dependent on the type of protective coating used during the manufacturing process. Vinyl floors are very easy to maintain. Sweeping or using a dust mop is often all that is needed.

Marble Flooring
Marble flooring is known for its natural beauty and unbeatable durability. Marble is a type of metamorphic rock that is formed beneath the earth's crust. Although the preferred choice for some, marble flooring is not the optimal choice for kitchen flooring as it is porous and prone
to staining.

Marble flooring comes in many styles and always adds a unique look to a room because no two slabs of marble are identical. It comes in a variety of colors such as pure white, deep green, brown, grey and blue. It is ranked in grades A through D, A being the strongest with the least natural imperfections and D being the softest with most faults. Tile Flooring
Stone tile flooring has a natural look and is strong and durable. It comes in several textures and colors and no two pieces are the same. Stone tiles can look traditional and rustic or contemporary and elegant. Although this flooring option can be expensive, stone tiles have the potential to last a lifetime.

Stone tile floors are generally easy to maintain, usually requiring only a mop for cleaning. For extra durability, stone should be periodically sealed. Since kitchens can become busy and messy places, you should choose stone tiles that are resistant to moisture damage and staining.

Granite tile flooring is one of the better options for kitchen flooring because it is denser and more durable than other stone options. Granite is still susceptible to stains so it should be sealed and periodically resealed for regular maintenance.

Kitchen Remodeling - Easy and Affordable With Do It Yourself Flooring

One affordable way to add extra flair to any kitchen remodeling project is with new vinyl flooring, either as part of a larger renovation plan, or a stand alone DIY project.

Ceramic Knife

Modern vinyl sheet goods are available in countless styles and colors; some which replicate other types of flooring. Such as ceramic or stone tile, or even hardwood. With state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques that make it difficult to discern from the real thing at first glance.

Ceramic Knife

To begin a do it your self flooring project, careful measurements must be taken. This will insure an adequate amount of vinyl flooring is purchased in the style and color of choice.

Step 1 - Begin by Removing Old Flooring

Remove moldings and baseboards from around the perimeter of the room.
Remove old flooring to prepare the surface:

Vinyl

Cut old vinyl flooring into 12-inch wide strips using a utility knife. Grab hold of an edge and pull up the strips by hand. Gripping as close to the floor as possible will help avoid tearing.

Stubborn pieces should be cut into narrower strips; 5-inches or so. Apply a mixture of water and detergent under the top layer to separate the backing.

For particularly tough pieces, scrape with a floor scraper or a wallboard knife. Sweep debris with a broom; use a shop vac for small debris and dust.

Carpet

Cut carpet loose from metal edging strips using a utility knife. Cut remaining carpet into strips narrow enough to handle easily, and then roll carpet strips up and remove.

Carpet pad will either be stapled or glued. Simply pull up stapled pad and remove; pull staples out of the floor and sweep the area. If the pad is glued, pull it up. Stubborn pads must be scraped with a floor scraper. Remove metal edging using a pry bar. Once the floor is scraped smooth, sweep up the debris.

Vinyl Tiles

Simply scrape off vinyl tiles using a floor scraper. Stubborn tiles can be softened with a heat gun, and pried off with a wallboard knife. Be sure and scrape off any remaining adhesive. Wet stubborn adhesive with a water and detergent mixture, and then scrape with a floor scraper.

Ceramic Tile

Knock ceramic tile loose with a hand maul and masonry chisel. Try to start in a grout line where grout is already cracked or loosened. Be especially careful when working around fixtures or drain flanges. Scrape any remaining adhesive with a floor scraper. Stubborn adhesive may need to be removed with a belt sander using a coarse grit.

Step 2 - Preparing the Surface

If you plan to reuse the old sub-floor surface, it must be very smooth, level, and free from any debris. When it comes to installing vinyl sheet flooring, even the slightest imperfection will show through.

If floor needs slight leveling, apply leveling compound using a smooth trowel. Be careful not to leave ridges; they need to be sanded smooth.

Moderately to heavily uneven and rough sub flooring should be covered with ¼-inch plywood underlayment, available in 4X4-foot panels. Start the first run along a wall across the room.

Stagger subsequent runs so that seams are at least 18-inches from the other, from one run to the next. Staple or screw the underlayment to the sub floor using fasteners. Space the fasteners about 6-inches around the perimeter of the underlayment, and about 8-inches apart elsewhere.

Door jambs may need adjustment so that underlayment and vinyl will tuck under them; close, but not tight. Accomplish this by undercutting using an undercut saw.

Step 3 - Make a Pattern

Using 15-pound asphalt felt paper, make a pattern of the floor by placing pieces of the felt around the room. Carefully trim edges to match the contour of the room; tape pieces together with duct tape.

Carefully roll or fold the pattern and remove from the room. In another room or in an area large enough roll out the sheet flooring with vinyl face up. Place the pattern on top and trace; cut the vinyl to fit the pattern. If in doubt, leave a small margin on the vinyl, which can be custom trimmed later.

Step 4 - Install the Sheet Vinyl

Lay the vinyl in place, and do any necessary final trimming. Once vinyl is trimmed for a good fit, carefully fold the vinyl back over on its self so that ½ of the room sub floor is exposed.

Apply a layer of floor adhesive to the sub floor or underlayment using a ¼-inch notched trowel. Carefully fold the vinyl over on to the glued side of the room, and roll with a heavy floor roller; available at most rental stores. Using a floor roller will help to work out air bubbles and create a smoother, firmer bond to the sub floor. Repeat procedure for the other side of the room.

Once vinyl is glued, replace baseboards and moldings. Install new metal edge trim where vinyl meets carpet or other flooring.

The word Ceramics is derived from the Greek word Keramos which means potter's earth or clay. Therefore, ceramics may be considered to be material made from naturally occurring clay or earth. Scientifically, ceramics are compounds of metallic and non-metallic elements. There are also manufactured ceramic materials such as diamond, SiC and Si3N4 and so on. In modern applications, a broader definition applies to the term ceramic, that is everything that is not a metal or organic material. Ceramics are inorganic as well as non-metallic materials which have been processed or used at high temperatures.

Ceramic Knife

The American Ceramic society has defined ceramic products as those manufactured "by the action of heat on raw materials, most of which are of an earthy nature -- while of the constituents of these raw materials, the chemical element silicon, together with its oxide and the compounds thereof, occupies a predominant position." That branch of knowledge which deals with the expertise of manufacturing and treatment of ceramic materials is called ceramic engineering.

Ceramic Knife

There are various types of ceramic products which we have classed under four distinct categories-

1. Structural - it includes roof and floor tiles, pipes and bricks.

2. White wares - they include objects like decorative, sanitary ware, table ware and wall tiles. The examples of white ware ceramics are stone ware, porcelain, bone china and earthen ware.

3. Refractories like glass and steel building crucibles, gas fire radiant and kiln linings.

4. Technical or fine ceramics. such products include tiles applied in the space shuttle program, ballistic fortification, bio-medical implants, missile nose cones, nuclear fuel uranium oxide pellets and jet engine turbine.

The various properties of ceramics are discussed below-

1. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES- they are crystalline or amorphous and are usually covalently bonded or iconic substances. Ceramic materials also show plastic deformations.

2. ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES- they are semi conductors and most of them are transitional metal oxides. However under extremely low temperatures some ceramics become superconductors.

CLASSIFICATION OF CERAMICS-

They are classified as non -crystalline and crystalline ceramics. The non-crystalline ceramics are formed from melts and are called glass ceramic. They are produced after a great range of processing whereas the crystalline ceramics do not require much doling out.

Apart from the ones discussed above, ceramics have a wide range of usage

1. It is used in making knives and ceramic knives are sharper than steel knives. Though they are brittle, their blades are more durable.

2. Ceramics like alumina and boron carbide are used as "Small Arms Protective Inserts"

3. Steel can be replaced by ceramic balls in ball bearings. Due to their hardness they have a longer lifetime. Their electrical insulating capacities are also valuable in bearings but a major drawback is their high cost.

4. Ceramic engines can be used in laboratories due to their high fuel efficiency and they do not need any cooling system. However mass production is not possible because cracks can easily develop in ceramics which may result in dangerous equipment failure.

5. Nowadays bio-ceramics are made which include synthetic bones and dental implants.

6. High tech ceramic is also employed in making watch cases.

Removing Old Tile for a New Tile Installation

It may seem that tile work would be one of the most difficult and time consuming projects a DIYer could take on, but, it's really one of the easier home improvement projects. Be patient and persistent, and double check all measurements and materials as you go, and you'll find tile installations easy to accomplish.

One of the most enjoyable parts of a tile installation project is removing all of the old tile. This is a basic tutorial on easily and safely removing old tile from an area so that new tile can be installed.

The first thing to realize is that different tile installations require using different methods. Removing old tile from a floor is a somewhat different process from removing old tiles from a back splash or a counter top.

- Roofing Shovel
- Eye Protection (When this is required, you know that it's going to be a fun job!)

- Grout Saw
- Hammer
- Cold Chisel
- Protective Gloves

Removing a Back Splash's Old Tile

Odds are that the old tile is attached directly to the sheet rock or drywall beneath, which means you will probably have to replace it. If you are not planning to save the old tiles, the removal process is actually very quick and easy. You will simply chisel a border around the tiles using the cold chisel and hammer or a grout saw, then use a powered hand saw to remove the sheet rock or drywall with the tiles attached to it. Should you plan to keep the old tiles for resale or future use, follow the instructions that are giving for removing floor tiles, but adapt them to use in the back splash area.

Removing A Floor's Old Ceramic Tile

Begin by throughly breaking up the old grout lines between the tiles all along the old floor. You can do this using a cold chisel and a hammer. If you intend to save the tiles for resale or reuse, you will need to exercise extreme care when breaking the grout so that you do not damage the tiles. One bad hammer strike can damage several tiles all at once.

Once the old grout is broken out, you can use a roofing shovel to pry up each of the tiles. To do this, you will put the flat end underneath each tile, and push forward and up. With the grout broken out, the tiles should peel up relatively easily. Scrape off any adhesive left behind from the old tiles, then follow up by scrubbing thoroughly with a heavy duty industrial stretch cleaner. In order to ensure that the new tile adhesive is effective, be sure that all grease, oil, dirt and any other residue is removed from the area completely.

Tips for Making the Job Go Quickly

Opt for a grout saw over a cold chisel and hammer in large surfaces, straight lines of grout, and big flooring areas.

At times, this will be necessary. You can remove a single tile to replace it, but, you should know that it will stand out from the old tile that surrounds it. To remove just one, take your chisel and hammer, break the grout that surrounds it, and pry up the old tile from the surface using a putty knife.

The best thing you can do to keep your knives sharp and to avoid wear and tear on the blade's edge is to make sure to use it on the proper cutting surface. Using a cutting board made of glass, stone, stainless steel or ceramic will quickly dull your knife. For this reason, it's advisable to avoid using your good kitchen knives to cut food directly on ceramic or porcelain dinnerware or on granite or marble countertops. The better option is using cutting boards made of wood, bamboo, plastic or synthetic because they won't dull your blades.

It's also important to keep your knives clean. Ask any professional chef how to wash a good knife and I would wager that 99 times out of 100 you will get the same answer and a stern one at that: A kitchen knife should always be washed by hand after each use using a mild liquid detergent and then dried thoroughly with a towel. And, then that same chef will tell you, and with great emphasis, that a good knife should NEVER be washed in a dishwasher because the heat and steam will ruin wood handles and the knife can be easily nicked by being tossed around in the dishwasher.

All this being said, I have to admit (and I realize that I may be about to incur the disdain of many amazing chefs by doing so), that I sometimes wash my knives in the dishwasher, because, due to safety reasons, I don't like handling a sharp blade with wet hands. For this reason, I only buy plastic-or composite-handled knives because wooden handled knives really shouldn't go into the dishwasher. And I've never had a problem with my knives getting nicked in there, although I'm very careful about how I load them.

If you choose to wash your knives in the dishwasher, make sure to place them securely in the top shelf of your dishwasher so that they won't move around during the washing cycle and don't use the heated dry cycle. For safety sake, be careful unloading the dishwasher. And, remove the knives from the dishwasher immediately after the washing cycle is complete.

In addition to keeping your knives clean, it's a good idea to keep them sharpened and in alignment. A honing steel is an essential piece of equipment if you want to keep your knives in tip-top shape. The honing steel is not a sharpener, but is used to re-align and straighten the blade's edge. By pulling the knife's edge along the length of the honing steel, the blade can be brought back to the correct angle. Manufacturers recommend using a honing steel every time you work with your knives.

As far as sharpening your knives, there are a number of home knife sharpeners on the market today and many of them do a good job at returning a reasonably sharp edge to your blades. The manual sharpeners are significantly less expensive than their electric counterparts, but just don't seem to be able to manage a blade that is pretty dull. If you keep up with your knives and the blades are only modestly dull, the manual knife sharpener is probably fine for you. Otherwise, you'll probably want to invest in an electric sharpener. When shopping for an electric knife sharpener, you may want to consider getting one that includes a non-motorized slot that can be used like a honing steel. This will save you having to buy the steel in addition to the sharpener. In addition, the honing mechanism on the electric sharpeners is much easier to use than the traditional honing steel.

The other option for sharpening your knives is to take them to a professional knife sharpener. This choice is certainly less convenient than running the blade through a sharpener at home, but nothing can give your blades a sharper edge than an experienced professional can. In fact, many professional chefs say that having your knives sharpened by a professional knife sharpener is the only way to go.

A tomato press can make your job a lot easier if you are making your tomato paste or sauce yourself. There are people who make a lot of it every year, in the hundreds of bushels of tomato produced, they are probably already know that they really need a tomato press, preferably one that is okay with heavy duty.

On the other hand there are people who most probably will never make a good use of a tomato press of that quality, they are those who produce just a few bushels for a few bottles of sauce and they're done with that for the year. These sauces are doable without an expensive tomato press, if you are one of those who don't prepare dozens of pounds of tomatoes every time you will probably like these two tricks to do the majority of the job of a tomato press by hand.

First you need to peel the tomatoes. This is not as hard as some people make it out to be, in fact with a quick trick it is a move of the hand. There are sauces that don't require you to remove either the peel or the seeds but if you are going for the seamless variation you better get a bowl of water boiling.

Remove the vines and clean the tomatoes at least once in water before you do this. When the water is boiling pour in the tomatoes, or at least as much as the pot takes. After 30 seconds take them out and pour them right into a bowl of cold water. This will separate the peel from the fruit and you will be able to pinch and pull it off with a single move. Removing the seeds is just as easy with a small spoon. Halve the tomatoes and scoop the seeds. This will not remove 100% of the seeds but is a good approximation of the process, most of them will be gone.

When you are ready with all that you can use an all purpose juicer or food mill to extract the juice. This process can be easily streamlined by choosing a good quality stainless steel tomato press or juicer but if you don't put a few dozen bottles of it away you're probably better off spending the 0 on something else.

Installing Drywall - Mudding and Taping

Installing Drywall, or hanging drywall as the professionals usually refer to the task, can be done by the homeowner. However, it is usually best done with two or more people as it requires significant lifting of heavy material. Mudding and Taping can also be performed by the homeowner, however these tasks require some practice and artistry.

Prior to actually hanging the drywall, the material first needs to be ordered and delivered. To determine how much material to order, measure all of the surface area, starting with the ceilings and then the walls. Calculate the total square feet and divide by 32. The result should give you the number of 4'x 8' sheets of drywall required for the job. I would also recommend adding another 5-10% to this figure to account for inefficiencies. Drywall does come in larger sheets, such as 4'x12', however for a Do-it-Yourself homeowner these larger sheets can become unwieldy and maybe even impossible to bring into the existing home.

For bathrooms or other moist areas Greenboard should probably be used as this material is moisture resistance.

For bathroom areas where ceramic tile is to be applied, e.g. Shower/Bathtub areas, Concrete board should be used. The concrete board is also referred to as Wonderboard or Durock.

Joint Compound and Fiberglass tape will also be required for Taping and Mudding. Joint Compound typically comes ready-mixed in 5 gallon containers. I would suggest 1-2 containers per 500 square feet of drywall. Fiberglass tape is quite inexpensive so I would suggest picking up 2 to 3 roles for most Do-it-Yourself drywall projects.

Drywall screws or ringed nails will also be required. Typically I use 1.25" length screws or nails. Also, strips of corner bead will be required.

Drywall Tools

Prior to starting drywall installation, you need to obtain the proper tools. A Drywall Lift really comes in handy when hanging sheetrock/drywall on the ceilings. You can rent Drywall Lifts at hardware or home improvement stores. If your budget does not allow for this cost, Jacks (or Ts) can be made out of 2"x 4"s. The Jacks (or Ts) should be of a length such that they are just an inch or two taller than the height of the ceiling and have a cross beam that is approximately 3' in width. Usually there are a couple of 45o angle braces connecting the crossbar to the main stem of the Jack. The Jack can then be used to hold up the drywall to the ceiling while it is screwed/nailed into place.

In addition to the Lift or Jacks, a drywall screw gun, hammer, T-square, carpenters knife, drywall saw and a keyhole saw are required. The keyhole saw is used for cutting around electrical boxes.

If mudding and taping are to be performed then Taping knifes, a Corner knife, sand paper, a pole sander and a Mud easel or pan will be necessary. For the taping knifes you will need a 6" wide blade and a 12" wide blade.

Preparing the site for Drywall

Prior to hanging the drywall, make sure the building inspector has first approved the Framing, Plumbing, Electrical and Insulation jobs. Secondly, a vapor barrier should be applied over the insulation on the outside walls if un-faced insulation was installed. Frequently sheets of plastic are used for creating the vapor barrier. The plastic is simply stapled to the framing, covering the insulation.

Finally, inspect all of the framing carefully. Ensure that nailers (e.g. 2" x 4"s) are existent at each corner and header, that the framing is straight, and that the framed walls create smooth planes. In addition, the ceiling should have strapping applied (1" x 3" cross boards). Also, make sure metal protection plates have been installed to studding where sheetrock screws or nails could inadvertently penetrate plumbing pipes or electrical wire.

Safety

Drywall installation is dirty, heavy work. The Gypsum in drywall can be irritating to the eyes, lungs and sinuses so wear safety goggles and masks to avoid breathing in the material. Gloves are also recommended to protect against sharp blades.

Installing Drywall

Start with the ceiling as this will allow the sheets on the walls to help hold the sheets on the ceiling. Use the Drywall lift or Jacks to hold the sheets in place while screwing or nailing them to the ceiling. The screws or nails should be installed such that they are slightly recessed and create a small dimple without breaking the paper. Screws or nails should be applied every 8 to 12 inches on each stud. Screws are typically stronger and can be placed further apart, e.g. 12 inches. It is best to fasten the screws/nails to the edges of the drywall first and then fill in the field afterwards.

Rows of drywall should be applied in a staggered pattern. This will create an interlocked pattern that creates a tighter and stronger ceiling/wall.

After the ceiling has been completed it its time to move on to the walls. Drywall should be applied from the top down, with the sheets hung perpendicular to the floor joists or studs. Again the rows should be staggered. The bottom piece should sit about ½ inches from the sub-floor.

For purposes of efficiency and strength it is best to apply the large sheets of drywall over the doors and window openings and cut out the excess later. This will create stronger/cleaner looking walls and save significant time.

Installing Corner bead

Once the drywall has been installed, corner bead should be applied to all outside edges. Corner bead should be nailed every 6-8 inches and penetrate the framing.

Taping and Mudding

Again start with the ceiling. Apply a skim coat of joint compound over the surface of a seam using a 6" wide taping knife. If the seam is wide, apply a liberal amount of joint compound to fill it. While the Joint compound is still wet, apply the fiberglass tape over the skim coat of Joint Compound. Make sure the seam is centered under the tape. Once the tape has been installed, apply additional Joint Compound over the tape, again using the 6" wide taping knife. Continue this for all of the seams. Note: the tape will still be visible. Additional coats will eventually hide it.

The inside corners are usually the most tricky and require practice. Patience is the best advice and note that additional coats will be applied later to smooth out any imperfections.

Once the seams are done, using the 6" wide taping knife, apply mud to all of the screw/nail dimples. A skim coat is all that is initially required.

Note: When applying the mud over the tape and screw/nail dimples, make sure all excess material and uneven patches are smoothed down with the blade. This will reduce sanding later.

Once the ceiling is done, you can move on to the walls. Repeat the same process, however with the outside corners just apply a liberal coat of joint compound to the valley that is formed by the corner bead. This valley typically represents the first 3 or 4 inches from the edge of the corner.

Once the first coat has been applied let it sit overnight or until it is dry, prior to starting the second application of Joint compound. Make sure to completely clean off the taping knife, the mud easel and any other containers or instruments that have mud on them prior to finishing up for the day.

Applying the Second Coat of Mud

After the first coat has thoroughly dried, it is now time to apply the second coat of mud. It is this coat that should hide the tape.

Again, start with the ceiling. Using the wider taping knife apply a generous amount of joint compound over the taped seams as you want to build up the area over the tape. Taking large strokes smooth the joint compound over the tape applying more pressure to the side of the taping knife further away from the tape. This will help to leave more mud over the tape. When complete, the mud should cover an area that extends beyond the width of the tape by 2 to 3 inches.

After the seams have all been completed, apply a second coat of mud over the screw/nail dimples. With this second coat, flare out the mud over the dimples such that the diameter of the mudded area is about 3-4 inches in diameter.

For the inside corners a Corner knife may come in handy. Corners involve a little artistry so again take your time. Apply a generous amount of joint compound and then run the Corner knife down the corner starting from the top. Take long, even strokes. A 6" taping knife may also be helpful to smooth out any imperfections.

For the outside corners, using the broad taping knife apply a generous amount of joint compound and flare out the material such that it extends out 6 inches or so from the corner. Again, apply more pressure to the blade side that is further away from the corner so that you leave more mud nearer the outside corner.

Once the second coat has been applied let it sit overnight or until it is dry, prior to starting the final application of Joint compound. Make sure to completely clean off the taping knife, the mud easel and any other containers or instruments that have mud on them prior to finishing up for the day.

Applying the Final Coat of Mud

After the first coat has thoroughly dried, it is now time to apply the final coat of mud. It is this coat that requires the most artistry and the least amount of joint compound. Here you are simply applying a final skim coat to the already mudded areas.

Prior to applying the skim coat it is best to take your wide taping blade and lightly pass over the mudded surfaces. This will remove any bumps or ridges.

Again start with the ceiling seams and apply a small amount of joint compound using the broad taping knife. Again continue to flare out the seam by extending the mudded area such that about 6 inches resides on each side of the now invisible tape. Remember this is a skim coat so little mud is required. The purpose of this coat is to effectively fill in any lines or recessed areas.

After the seams have all been completed, apply a final coat of mud over the screw/nail dimples. With this second coat, flare out the mud over the dimples such that the diameter of the mudded area is about 6-8 inches in diameter.

For the corners use the broad taping knife and add just enough mud such that you can flare out the mudded surface area to about 8-12 inches, taking care to filling in any lines or dimples.

Once the final coat has been applied let it rest overnight or until it is dry,

Sanding

Sanding is a very dusty and dirty mess so please uses goggles and a mask.
I find it best to use a pole sander with an open screened sand paper material specifically designed for sanding sheetrock/drywall mud.

Lightly sand all of the taped areas, however concentrate sanding on the outer edges of the mudded areas such that all seams and ridges are eliminated and blend into the main surface areas.

Once sanding is complete, vacuum up the dust and you are ready for priming and painting the walls and texturing the ceilings.

Cutlery is the most essential part of tableware. Known as flatware (of which silverware is just a form) in the USA, it refers to any hand utensil used to serve and eat food in. It traditionally includes spoons, forks, and knives. In the US, it also includes plates, besides spoons, forks, and knives.

Ceramic Knife

A flatware set commonly comprises a salad fork, a dinner fork, a dinner spoon, a soup spoon, and a teaspoon. It is available in the market both in single units as well as a set of five, twenty, or forty five pieces. These utensils are primarily of two main types, sterling silverware and stainless steel. There are other less expensive variants such as silver plated, plastic, and ceramic flatware. Based on the raw material used, the prices may vary from to hundreds of dollars. Available in a wide variety of prices and styles, these items of flatware serve both utilitarian and decorative purposes.

Ceramic Knife

The most expensive variety of silverware available is sterling silverware. According to US regulations, sterling silverware must contain at least 92.5% pure silver. The balance metal in sterling silverware is copper which is added for strength. Silverware required for a five place seating costs anything from 0 to 0, or perhaps more.

Silver flatware can be manufactured in an ornate and unique design, as silver is highly malleable in nature. Such cutlery is very flamboyant and is available in sets of not only five, but also in over a hundred pieces. Sterling silver, however, tarnishes very soon and needs regular polishing.

A more utilitarian and affordable variety of tableware is made of stainless steel. Manufacturers market them as 18/0, 18/8 or 18/10 stainless steel flatware. The figures depict the amount of chromium and nickel in the stainless steel alloy. In the 18/8 variety of stainless steel flatware, the 18 stands for the percentage of chromium and 8 stands for that of nickel.

Generally considered corrosion-free and stain-proof, stainless steel flatware is easy to maintain. There is a wide variety in the design and cost based on the finishing, weight, design, and knife blade quality.

Silver-plated flatware is another very good alternative to expensive silverware. Made from stainless steel coated with a thin layer of silver, it is more affordable and attractive. Production of plastic cutlery has increased manifold in recent years. Used as disposable flatware, it is very hygienic and has great usage in the fast food industry and by various airlines.

How to Fix Bathroom Walls and Ceilings

It is common for bathroom ceilings and walls to receive damage with passage of time. It is because of the presence of moisture in the bathroom surroundings. Some times you have your paint peel or establishment of mold or damage on drywall are some common examples. It is expensive to hire a professional; you can do it on your own if you have some idea and knowledge about the required material and handling of different situations. This can save you a lot of money. Here are given some direction to fix your bathroom walls and ceilings on your own.

Directions

1. Start with inspecting the condition of the walls and ceilings. Evaluate the damage done to walls and ceilings. Locate any signs of mold on drywalls or inside of the walls. If you find any signs of mold on the drywall, you need to repair it first by removing and replacing entire drywall. If the molding is present on the inner walls, you may have to contact the specialist.

2. Once evaluation of the damage is done, mark the damage parts on the walls or ceilings with pencil and measuring tape. After marking the damage parts, take drywall saw or drywall router and cut the damage parts carefully.

3. Take a new sheet and cut a piece of same size which you have just cut from damaged part. Make sure that the piece is of exact measure to fit in the place. Take a 1 1/4 inch screws and fix the new piece on the drywall with screwdriver attachment.

4. Take a drywall mesh tape and fix it in a way that half of it is on the new piece and half on the existing drywall. Now apply a coat of drywall joint compound with the help of 6 inches drywall taping knife. It should be applied in a way that 4 inches of joint compound spreads on each side of the drywall taping. Leave the joint compound to air dry.

5. When you are sure that joint compound is dry, take a sand sponge and sand the compound until it smoothes. Take 8 inch drywall taping knife and with it apply a coat of drywall topping compound on the sanded area. Drywall topping compound should cover 6 inches on each side of the tape. Let the topping dry for sometime.

6. Sand the topping compound properly and apply 8 inches of topping compound on each side of the mesh tape with 10 inches of drywall taping knife. You have to repeat the same process until you get the entire new patch perfectly merge into the existing drywalls.

Suggestions

You can use spackling compound for small patches results from screws and nail holes. Later sand the spackling compound smooth.

You will find that with a little care in layout of the tile, choosing the right color combinations and sizes of your tile and then carefully installing the tile can result in work that you will be proud to show off to your friends and you can save large sums of cash as an extra bonus.

Ceramic Knife

TOOLS AND MATERIALS REQUIRED - Paper pad, pencil, measuring tape, 2" level, chalk line, tile cutter (you may rent one by the day at most rental stores or buy an inexpensive one for less than ), sponges, bucket for clean water, bucket for mixing grout, grout, pre-mix tile adhesive, latex (rubber) gloves and a sponge float or two and a water bucket.

Ceramic Knife

LAYOUT - Start with a small project. Perhaps a countertop or backsplash in the kitchen or perhaps a sink backsplash in the bathroom. Using a pad and pencil sketch the surface you are going to apply tile to and measuring each dimension of the work. A typical area sketch will show all dimensions from wall to wall, floor to ceiling for whatever surface where you are going to install tile. Keep your measurements accurate. Tile is expensive so limit your waste.

COUNTERTOP - The countertop must be very stable and solid. A double layer of ¾ plywood or ceramic tile cement backer board and a layer of ¾" plywood is a minimum. Cement backer board is available under different trade names but is especially made for ceramic tile. Make sure it is secured properly. Cutting can be done with a power saw and carbide blade but causes a great deal of dust so cut it outside and use safety glasses and a dust mask. Backer board in sink areas is recommended.

For this example, we are going to install tile on a kitchen countertop. When we measure the countertop area, we find it is 2'-0" (24") deep or wide and 10'-0" (120") long. A little math tells us we have 20 square feet (SF) of surface to work with. (2'x10'=20'). Now we pick out our tile. The most common kitchen countertop ceramic tile size is 4 1/4" x 4 ¼" but you may use any size tile you would like. Tile comes in 12" x 12", 1" x1" (mosaic), 6" x 6", 8" x8" and even larger tiles are available. Some countertops are done in broken tile pieces to create a really different design of your own. Off to the store we go. You will find dozens of sizes and colors to choose from at most tile stores, and large retail home stores. Making this choice can sometimes be the hardest part of this job. Purchase the tile you like and get 20SF plus 2SF extra for special cuts. If you have chosen a stock tile, you can always go back and get a few more pieces to finish. If you have chosen a close-out or special sale tile, get plenty (perhaps 30SF) as there may not be any left when you go back. Purchase all the other supplies at this time. The salesperson can help you figure out the amount of adhesive and grout you need but all packages have approximate square footage of coverage on them.

INSTALLATION - Start by dry laying the tile on the countertop. Place full pieces at the front edge and working to the back of the counter. If you find you have a very small piece at the back, say ½" wide, try spreading out the tile a little to increase the grout joint width to take up this space. You do not want to try and install these tiny pieces of tile. Do the same for the length of the top. If you find you have approximately a ½ tile or more at the back of the top that's great. It is the least seen part of the countertop. Once you set your toaster, blender, bread box and can opener on the counter, the back edge almost disappears. Using your 2' level as a straightedge, make a pencil line from front to back and square to the front edge of the counter. If you have a 2' framing square this is the time to use it. Just place one leg against the front of the counter and the other leg will be square. Make sure the trim along the front edge of the counter is nailed tightly and is level with the top of the tile. Front trims are usually wood but counter edge tiles are available if you like that look. Purchase enough lineal footage of edge tile to go end to end of the counter top. If you are using edge tile, these will be the first pieces installed. Edge pieces come in 6", 8" and custom lengths but is not recommended to try and line them up with the countertop tiles. Starting with a ½ tile, install the edge tiles from one end to the other. A support ledger should be installed under the bottom leg of the tile as a temporary support until the adhesive dries. Spread some adhesive along side the pencil mark you made for the square line. Spread only a little at first until you get used to the time it takes to install the tile and the setting time for the adhesive. You don't want to try and remove dried adhesive. As you place the tile, twist the tile slightly to assure you have full contact with the adhesive below.

Ok, you placed the first 6 tiles. Are the lines straight? Are the tops of the tiles level and even? Are the spaces between the tiles all the same? Plastic spacers are available for various widths of grout spaces and are a good idea for your first project but your eye is usually the best way to judge this. For a short time, you can move the tile around to get the best spacing. Now go ahead with the rest pf the tile making sure you do not place adhesive where the cut tile will go. A small spackle knife can easily remove any adhesive accidentally spread into those areas. Return the adhesive to the bucket ONLY IF IT'S clean! You don't want dirt or other debris in your adhesive as it will make a bump under your other tile. You will find it gets easier and easier. Install all your full tile first. Take another good look at your work. Are the tile joints straight from end of end of the counter? Adjust them now. Tile cutting is really easy but try a piece as a sample. Measure the space you have for the cut tile and deduct the width of your grout joints. Carefully mark the tile and place it in the cutter. Follow the cutter instructions. You will find it does not take a great deal of pressure on the handle to score the tile. Press on the handle and it will snap the tile on your score mark. Practice a little. (remember the extra tile you bought?) Don't get upset if you crack a few or the tile does not snap on your mark. They are cast ceramic and contain air bubbles and other imperfections that sometimes causes them to crack unevenly. Install the cut pieces but hand "buttering" (placing the adhesive on the backs of the tile) and placing them one by one until you have them all installed. Clean all you tools carefully. It is almost impossible to remove dried adhesive. Check over your work and make sure you did not leave adhesive sticking up out of any joint or on the face of the tiles. Using a damp sponge and your spackle knife, carefully remove any excess adhesive. Let the tile dry 24 hours.

GROUTING - Grout comes in both sanded and non-sanded types. Sanded types are intended for use where you have larger grout joints such as floors. Non-sanded is generally for walls and countertops. Mix your grout in a small, paper bucket available at paint or hardware stores. You will most likely want to throw it away when you are done. Grout also comes in many colors with color being the choice of the buyer. You should not however use a white grout in kitchen counters as food stuffs, oils and other kitchen items can quickly stain it. Try to stay to a darker color. Leave white for the bathroom. There are grays, pewter, off-whites and other colors than will compliment your tile color. You may want to wear gloves for this part as grout can stain your skin. Some people are allergic to latex so rubber gloves are also fine. Place a small amount of the mixed gout on the tile. Yes, right on top of the tile. Using your sponge float, push the grout down into the joints working at a 45 degree angle to the joints as much as possible. You will find you will have to push and prod the grout into corners and edges but it's all technique. You will quickly develop one of your own. Scrape the excess grout off the tile with the edge of the sponge float. Make sure the joints are all filled and are slightly below the top of the tile just a little bit. Never leave it above the top of the tile. Work a small area at a time. As you work, keep an eye on the completed areas. They will quickly develop a haze over the tile from the drying grout. Do not leave this haze on tile. It will be extremely hard to remove later if possible at all. Using your bucket of clean water and another clean sponge (6"-8" long is best) gently wipe the excess grout that has dried on the tile being careful not to wipe the grout out of the joints again at a 45 degree angle to the joints when possible. You will have to repeat this cleaning 2-3 times to get it all off the tile but eventually the haze will stop appearing. Remember, do not wipe the grout out of the joints. You can use your sponge to reshape damaged joints or place a little grout somewhere you missed but timing is everything. If done while the grout is still wet, you will never see this touchup work. Once all the grout is installed and wiped clean, you are done. Let the grout dry for at least 24 hours before cleaning the countertop or placing items upon it.

WALL TILE- Wall tile installation is basically the same as a countertop with a few exceptions. Ceramic tile on walls must be installed on either water resistant drywall (green board) but cement backer board is amuch better job. Tile generally is subject to high water use around sinks and toilets for example, so a water resistant backer is important. Shower areas MUST have cement backer board for long life of your wall. We mentioned the use of tile spacers and this is a good place for them. They will help keep the tile from sliding down, closing the grout joint while the adhesive is still wet. Joint spacers come loose in a package or sometimes on a card connected with those little plastic ends like model airplane parts. Just snap them off as you use them placing one or two in each joint. Once the adhesive dries, you can pull them out and use them again and again. Layout remains the same as before. In this case you want your cut pieces to be at the floor on top of the baseboard. This is least viewable area. If you are using ceramic tile baseboard, install these pieces first making sure they are level across the entire wall. Make your plumb starting line as before and start your tile along this line to assure straight vertical lines. Step back often and admire your work. Make sure the grout line spaces are straight!

CUTTING-Cutting small pieces of tile is the same as a countertop. Use your tile cutter. Once you encounter an outlet box however, these require a little extra work. If you are very lucky the outlet box is between two tile or at the edge of one tile. You can cut the sides of the box using a carbide blade and grinder or a portable ceramic tile saw. (These are also available at your rental store by the day). Cut the sides first and the score the top of the box mark. Using a pair of square jawed pliers, grip the tile firmly and snap out the piece. WEAR YOUR GLOVES AND SAFTEY GLASSES! Small chips and grinding dust can easily cause an eye injury. Ok, you broke the tile. Try again. When you get one done the rest will be easy. The cover plate will cover any space around the outlet as long as you keep the cut fairly close. Test fit the tile dry. If it fits and the cover will cover the gaps, go ahead and install it. Circles are a little harder. These can be made with a grinder if they are large enough circles but for small circles a Dremel tool or drill with a carbide drill bit works best. You can drill a series of holes along the line as close together as possible and then snap out the remaining piece. Using the grinder or Dremel, grind away any parts that need to be removed to get the finished opening. Test fit it dry first. These are the basic items you will encounter in a wall project. Grouting is the same as a countertop. Work small areas, be careful to remove the haze as you proceed and do not wipe out the grout joints. Tiles can also be installed at a diagonal to the walls to make the room appear larger or create visual interest.

FLOORS-Floor tiles are generally 12' x12" but come in other sizes as well. Special made pieces such as emblems, decorative plaques and borders are all available to be included in your floor layout. Layout is a little different for a floor than a wall or countertop. You want to hide the cuts if at all possible under the toe kicks of the base counters. At the same time you want the tile to appear evenly spaced within the room. Starting at the entrance doorway, mark the centerline of the door opening and chalk a line across the entire room square to the doorway. Now measure from the layout line to each side wall. Does the tile work out to even tile? Does it work out to equally sized cut pieces? That would be ideal. A persons eye tricks them into thinking that if the tile line in the middle of the door they entered is centered and straight, the whole floor is centered and straight. There is nothing wrong if you have different sized pieces on each side. With cabinets the fridge and other appliances, the edges are barely visible but the center of the floor is always visible. Once again, dry lay some tile from your layout line at the doorway centerline to the walls. Take a good look. Is this what you want to see when it is finished? If it is, go ahead and start the installation following all the guidelines for walls and counters as to how to proceed. Tile joints in floors are always wider than walls or countertops. 3/8" joints are common but I have seen ½" joints that look great. It is your decision as to what you want to see. You are also going to use sanded grout for your floors. It is stronger than un-sanded grout and the sand adds extra strength to the grout for the larger joints. You will use LOTS of grout for a floor compared to a countertop. The use of ¾' power drill and grout mixer paddle is recommended but you can hand mix it. It is a lot of hard work. Placement of the grout is the same, work small areas, cleaning the tile as you go and so on. Keep off the finished tile for at least 24 hours. It may look dry but it is not. Walking on un-dried adhesive can twist a tile out of line and look terrible forever. Chiseling out a hardened tile and resetting it is no fun at all.

CRACKED TILE-I will touch on these for a moment as these styles are coming into use more and more each day. Cracked tile tops are made with bits and pieces of many different tiles that you have gathered or purchased at your local tile store. If your are looking for a mixed color top of red and green, get some red and green tiles that are the colors you like and we will break them. You can mix lots of colors for a true random colored mosaic looking piece. Place the tiles in a good paper sack and place it on the floor (preferably not ceramic). Use your sidewalk. Wearing your safety glasses and gloves strike the tile with a hammer breaking them into small pieces. Keep checking the bag. Pieces ½" to 1" are great but the smaller the pieces are, the more pieces you have to install. Smaller pieces will give a more mosaic like look and can be well worth the effort. With your prices ready, draw the pattern or rough picture you are trying to create. If you are trying totally random, just make sure the colors are well mixed. If you are creating a picture or distinct pattern, apply your tile adhesive directly onto the piece of tile and then place it. This will keep your layout lines visible and allow you stop work whenever you tire. The rest of the installation is the same as other tile work. Work clean and keep your tools clean. Let your work dry well before applying grout.

MOSAIC TILE- Mosaic tile comes from the factory glued to an often sized 12" x 18" plastic grid sheet as a base to hold dozens of tile at once. When installing mosaic tile on a floor or wall, this saves hours of labor in that you can set 12" x 18" of tile at once and not have to apply each 1 x1" tile by itself. When doing custom work, you want to install each tile one at a time. The tile will simply snap off the sheet or you may use a razor knife to slice off sections to infill your pattern perhaps 2,10 or 20 pieces at a time. Mosaic tile is used by artists and craftsmen worldwide to create beautiful pieces of work from pottery to wall and floor designs or a picture to hand on the wall for decoration. The designs are limitless and are limited only by your imagination. Mosaic tiles are very, very hard but can still cut with great care. When working with small pieces be careful when using power tools to cut the pieces and keep your fingers away from the blade. Always, always use your safety glasses and gloves. Cut tile can leave very sharp edges to cut you. A gentle rubbing of the tile edge on sandpaper will help remove this sharp edge. HINT-Watch in your local tile store or home center for busted boxes or odd sheets of tile people have returned. You maybe able to get a great price on these far less than retail and the stores clean up the mess. It can provide you with a far greater choice of colors to work with without having to stock whole sheets of odd colors. Create away!

A few extra hints. There are various products on the market for waterproofing your tile grout joints. Most are silicone based products that are applied with a brush or self-contained roller applicator. These do work but need upkeep by the reapplication of the silicone to maintain the seal. Oft times, the silicone discolors from cleaning agents or sunlight and does become unattractive. It is difficult to remove in these cases so caution should be used in using them. Keeping the joints clean and the occasional touchup of the grout should be all that is needed for long life.

With practice you can create some rather outstanding ceramic tile work. There is no limit what you can do with designs, colors, or even pictures within your tile work. Try it!

If your ceramic tiles have some missing pieces you should replace them. When the tiles are only chipped, you can use some tile repair tips. First of all you need to buy some special glue for ceramic tiles. The glue can help to fill the missing pieces of ceramic. You will also need some paint. It's important to match the paint with the color of your tile. For this, try to bring a sample of the tile or a photo to the store.

Before you start with the tile repair, you need to clean them using a household cleanser. Place the special ceramic glue onto the cracked areas. Use a knife to force the damaged tile. The knife can also help you smooth the damaged area. You should let the glue work for about 24 hours.

Thermal Shock in Industrial Ceramics

There are many reasons for thermal shock failure in industrial applications of ceramics. On analysis they usually come down to one or more of the following factors.

Application/use of the product

It is often possible to improve the performance by changing one or more of these but as with all ceramic applications thermal shock is only part of the equation and changes must be looked at in context of all the performance requirements.

When designing any product in ceramic it is necessary to look at the overall requirement and often then to find the best compromise that will work.

In high temperature applications, thermal shock is often the main cause of failure. It is comprised of a combination of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity and strength. Rapid changes in temperature both up and down cause temperature differentials within the part, not unlike a crack occurring by putting an ice cube against a hot glass. Movement through differing expansion/contraction leads to cracking and failure.

There are no simple answers to the thermal shock issue however the following guidelines do tend to be beneficial.

Select a material grade that has some inherent thermal shock characteristics but meets the needs of the application. Silicon carbides and silicates are excellent. Alumina based products are less good but can be improved with the right design. Porous products are generally better than impervious and will take larger changes in temperature. Thin walled products perform better than thick wall. Also avoid large transitions in thickness throughout the part. Sectional parts may be better as this provides less mass and offers a Pre cracked design alleviating stress raisers. Minimise the use of sharp corners as these provide ideal starting points for cracks. Avoid tension loading of the ceramic. Parts can be pre stressed through design to help alleviate this problem. Where possible look at the application process to see if it is possible to provide a more gentle change in temperature. Pre heating the ceramic or reducing the rate of temperature change.

The above points will help alleviate thermal shock problems but it is always best to discuss the situation with experts in the field.

Procedures In Taping Drywall Joints

When you are looking to finish your interior walls and ceilings with drywall, you have the option to have it installed by experienced drywall installers or have it installed yourself. Hanging drywall is easier and simpler than other interior finishing materials so you can definitely do it yourself if you want to save more money on drywall installation. This way, you can use your savings to some other home improvement projects that you might want to consider.

After you are done hanging the drywall, the next and final finishing step is the mudding and taping. Some find this a bit tricky but others would find it even simpler than hanging drywall itself. If you know what to do and if you have the drywall taping tools ready, then you can possibly finish your walls and ceilings the way you wanted them to be. Proper mudding and taping will allow a perfectly spotless and smoothly finished drywall installation.

Ceramic Knife

In taping drywall joints, you will need drywall tape, drywall knives in 6", 8", 10" or 12", sandpaper or drywall sander and the ready - mixed joint compound. With your 6" corner knife, start spreading a thin coat of mud in to the joints where the edges of the drywall sheets meet. Apply the tape over the mud and press it tightly into the joint with the corner knife. Smooth out the edges with a downward movement of the corner knife to allow excess mud under the tape to come out for a smoother finish. Leave it to dry overnight.

When the mud over the tape is thoroughly dried, remove small bumps with your 8" knife or sandpaper, scraping or sanding lightly. Then apply the next coat of mud over the dried tape, 6" to 8" wider this time. Again, allow it to dry overnight. Repeat the same procedure with the last coat, using your largest knife. Spread a 12" wide thin coat evenly and let it stand to dry again overnight.

To finally finish your taped drywall, sanding is the last step in the procedure. To make sanding a whole lot easier for you, most especially if the area is wide, sandpaper is not enough. Drywall sanders with vacuum attachments are available for easier, quicker and less messy sanding of your drywall.

How to Remove Ceramic Tiles

Given the amount of work involved, and the degree of difficulty, when you're looking at removing ceramic tiles on the wall or floor, give some consideration to whether you might be better off just replacing the cracked or damaged ones. Of course, if you can't get matching ones, that means doing the whole job over, but when you do, remember to buy enough tiles that you have extras, so that it won't need to be repeated again, should you ever have a couple of them damaged.

Ceramic Knife

Before starting a removal job, decide whether you have anything there worth salvaging. It could be that while you want to redecorate the shower stall, that tile would like great on the wall in the laundry room. And it can be used over again, as long as you are careful in removing it. Ceramic tile has lots of compression strength, but very little tensile strength. That means you can put weight on it, but to twist or bend the piece, will likely break it.

Ceramic Knife

First, you'll need to remove any trim that covers the edges of the tiles. Next, remove all the grout you can between the tiles. They're glued to your wall or floor, so nothing is going to fall off when you do this. But the grout must be removed, because in attaching them all together, it's like creating one giant sheet of ceramic, and it will be just as brittle as a single tile. So forcing one tile, can end up breaking a number of them.

Once the grout is cleaned away, take a very thin putty knife and start by working a corner under the edge of one tile. Work along the top, gradually inserting more of the blade as you go. You can use a hammer to gently tap the handle of the knife to help insert it. When the blade is about halfway down the back of the tile, you can exert slow, upward pressure, which should pop the tile off.

If you plan to re-use the tile, the backs will need to be cleaned, either with an adhesive remover, or by grinding, if they were applied with thinset.

How Ceramic Sharpeners Work

A ceramic sharpener, like other knife sharpeners, work by removing a very thin layer of metal from the blade of your knife. Ceramic sharpeners are made from dense ceramic material instead of stone. They are especially recommended for sharpening very hard knives. The ceramic material used is harder than other sharpening stones, and will not wear out as quickly. Softer sharpening stones can get worn down in the middle if you do a lot of sharpening, forcing you to re-surface and flatten your stone. Unlike some other knife sharpeners, they are resistant to rust as well.

Ceramic Knife

The ceramic material used in such sharpeners is as hard as glass, yet still abrasive. Ceramic sharpeners will become darker as they remove layers of steel from your knives. To return the material to its original white color, simply clean it with cleanser and water. Make sure that the ceramic sharpener is dry when you use it to sharpen your knives. Most ceramic sharpeners are designed to be used dry, unlike other sharpeners which require water or oil.

Ceramic Knife

Most ceramic sharpeners are in the form of a rod or bar of ceramic material. To use these sharpeners, set one end on your work surface work surface, or hold the handle in your left hand with the knife in your right hand. Holding the knife at an angle of 20-25 degrees from the rod, slice downwards drawing the knife along the blade as you do so. Some sharpeners come in a pull-through model or angled type, which can be useful in maintaining a consistent angle as you sharpen the knife.

Some ceramic sharpeners come mounted in a wooden block at an angle. In this case, hold the knife straight down to achieve the correct angle with the ceramic rod. Spend two or three minutes on each side of the blade, keeping the knife at a consistent angle to the ceramic piece. Press gently, letting the abrasive ceramic rod do the work.

Although most ceramic sharpeners are shaped like a rod, others are in the form of a wheel or flat stone, or a pull-through model that simply requires you to pull the knife through a notch in the ceramic material. Besides form, ceramic sharpeners also differ in the grit of the ceramic material. The larger the grit, the more effective they will be against badly worn blades, because they will take off more of the steel surface of the blade. However, a finer grit is necessary for achieving a very sharp blade. One side is usually ribbed or rougher than the other. First use the knife against the rough side to begin the sharpening process. Finish by sharpening the knife blade against the smoother ceramic surface.

Who is Peggy Karr?

Peggy Karr is not exactly a household name. But her glassware can be found in many households around the world.

Ceramic Knife

Peggy Karr started her business in 1987 in her home in Morristown, New Jersey. She had become enamored with the process of enameled glass and set out to master the technique. Peggy Karr Glass, Inc. has grown to be the largest enameled fused glass company in the world - and its all "Made in America."

Ceramic Knife

The glass is cut by hand into over twenty different shapes and sizes to support a wide product line of display pieces, ornaments, dishes and serving trays. The company employs artists to create the designs, then uses a computer to print a line drawing as a basic template for the artisan.

One of the things that makes Peggy Karr Glass, Inc. unique in the industry is that they formulate and produce their own colors using a combination of finely ground glass and ceramic pigments. The artists apply the colors to the glass using tiny, hand-held sifters. It is a delicate and intricate process.

Layers of color are added to each piece using stencils that are computer generated. Although the actual designs are duplicated, each piece is handmade by the artisan with subtle variations of the depth of color and texture. Each piece is unique, but when purchased as a set, will look like matching pieces.

After the artisan has finished adding all the layers of color, a second layer of glass is added on top, ensuring that the design and colors will never fade or be chipped away. The two pieces of glass are then placed in a ceramic mold which will give the piece its final form and adds a distinctive pebble finish to the back of every piece. The molds are placed in a kiln that has been designed by Peggy Karr especially for her glassware. The kiln heats the glass to 1600 degrees, causing the two pieces of glass and to fuse tightly together, forming one solid piece of glass with the design and color sealed within.

The final pieces are highly functional as well as beautiful. The design and colors are protected from washing away or being scraped by knives and forks. Each piece is inspected and only those that are judged as perfect get the marking of 'PKG' for Peggy Karr Glass, followed by the year.

Her designs cover a wide variety, from traditional fruits and flowers to abstract and geometric shapes. They have been featured in leading magazines including Redbook, Mary Engelbreight's Home Companion and Coastal Living. Her products are widely sold at smaller specialty shops as well as major retailers.

Although the idea of laying the flooring, that too vinyl flooring might sound like an apprehensive task, it apparently is not that difficult. It is one of those home improvement projects that is going to need some time and attention for its successful accomplishment.

It seems troublesome to lay the vinyl around any fixture in the room- like a sink etc. If these fixtures cannot be moved there has to be a solution by which the vinyl could be laid. It is actually simple. You first need to make a template of the room made of paper. This template needs to be laid before using the vinyl.

The template cannot be made of very soft paper which is vulnerable to wear and tear. A very hard form of paper is preferable. Supposing the template of the sink is to be made. A template of half of the foot of the sink should be made first and then the nest half of the same measurement should be laid. This would give finesse edges. Then the vinyl should be laid very meticulously.

Replacing Bathroom Floor Tiles

Sometimes the hardest part about laying bathroom floor tiles is removing the old tile. This process will vary to a certain degree depending on the type of tile that is already there. It may be just a regular plain tile, perhaps slate tiles, you never know. Perhaps the most difficult type to remove will be a thin linoleum bathroom floor tile.

Ceramic Knife

The easiest bathroom floor tile to remove would most likely be a thick stone or slate tile. These will have a small amount of grout between the tiles and each will be separate from the other. A chisel can be placed at a 45 degree angle to a tile and given a small tap with a hammer. After a few taps, the tile should start to come up. If it is coming up slowly, try decreasing the angel to around 30 degrees.

Try to damage the wood under the floor tile as little as possible. Linoleum may be difficult because it is so thin as compared to an actual "tile." You can use a utility knife to slightly score the linoleum somewhere in the middle of the floor and give yourself a starting place. The linoleum will most likely come up in pieces, depending on the age of the flooring.

Once the old flooring is up, you will most likely be left with a rough surface covered in bits of the old adhesive. There may be a few gouges in the wood where you or a previous person have damaged the wood while removing old tiles. Paint thinner or an adhesive remover can be used to clean the wood. Most bathrooms are going to be fairly enclosed, so be aware of ventilation and use fans to keep fumes from building up. Do not be afraid to take frequent breaks to catch your breath, these fumes can be very dangerous.

Before beginning the application of new bathroom floor tiles, make sure that you have two work areas. The bathroom itself will be one work area, and there should be another where tiles can be measured and cut. Ceramic or slate tiles will need to be cut with a table saw and with the appropriate saw blade. It is important to keep the tile from getting too hot when cutting them and to keep the dust from the tiles under control. This can be done by applying a small amount of water to the cutting surface while using the saw.

From the doorway, workout the centreline and make sure this is square to the wall. Start laying the tiles from the centre of this centreline and work out towards the walls. You will find you'll have to cut probably all the tiles as you near the walls and although time consuming, this is the best method. Don't be tempted to start laying the tiles at one wall and work towards the other as one they are all laid, they won't look 'centred'. Remember, if a job is worth doing it's worth doing well.
